Predicting outages starts with connecting OMS, AMI, and SCADA
“Predict outages before they happen” is one of the most requested capabilities on the grid, and one of the most over-simplified. The prediction is real and valuable — but on most utilities the barrier isn’t the algorithm. It’s that the signals needed to make the call live in systems that were never designed to talk to each other.
The model is downstream of the integration
Detecting and predicting an outage means correlating, in something close to real time:
- OMS — the outage management system’s view of known events and restoration
- AMI — smart-meter “last gasp” and premise-level events that reveal outages the grid view misses
- SCADA — real-time device and feeder telemetry
- CIS — so an event translates instantly into how many customers are affected
- weather and historic outage data, in-house and third-party, to predict the next event rather than just report the current one
Every one of these is a different schema, cadence, and owner. Get the integration right and premise-level detection, real-time customer-impact counts, and predictive lead time all fall out of it. Get it wrong and the smartest model in the world is scoring stale, partial inputs.
Detection and prediction are two jobs, not one
They’re worth separating. Detection shortens the time to know an outage is happening and how wide it reaches — largely an integration and streaming problem. Prediction — the influence of weather and near-term asset condition on the grid — is the modeling layer that sits on top of that integrated foundation. Trying to buy the second without building the first is where these programs stall.
Outage prediction is sold as a model and delivered as an integration. Wire OMS, AMI, SCADA, CIS, and weather together in near real time and premise-level detection, real-time customer-impact counts, and predictive lead time all fall out of the same foundation. Skip that step and the smartest algorithm on the market is just scoring stale, partial inputs. Build the foundation first; the prediction is what you put on top.
